Some final words from Ben Stein…... This is a very compelling send off, it says to me that Ben Stein is truly a real American. For  many years Ben Stein has written a biweekly column called ‘Monday Night  At Morton’s.’ (Morton’s is a famous chain of Steakhouses known to be  frequented by movie stars and famous people from around the globe.) Now,  Ben is terminating the column to move on to other things in his life.  Reading his final column is worth a few minutes of your time. Ben Stein’s Last  Column…   How  Can Someone Who Lives in Insane Luxury Be a Star in Today’s ...

New Bedford Community is the Answer... I’m writing in response to Bob Unger’s Sunday 6-28-09 editorial and Karen Zegarowski kudos to you both for identifying the only real hope this community has. It’s COMMUNITY.  Community is the key to our salvation. As a leader of the ward 3 community group, Mt. Pleasant Street Neighborhood Association, I can tell you our membership is strong both in commitment and will. We’ve been working at talking to one another, communicating our concerns to the police and city officials where ever necessary. It is our responsibility as tax payers to stay involved and provide the...

New Bedford’s Code Enforcement Tas... City Announces “Targeted Code and Nuisance Ordinance Enforcement Team” .  Golly Gee where have we seen this idea, under Dynamic Solutions perhaps? However, This is a major victory for the citizens of New Bedford. Men Who Cook... The Woma’s Center in New Bedford has been relying on the community to come an enjoy food as part of their annual fundraising event “Men Who Cook” for some many years now. But due to the sudden enforcement of a health department regulation they were unable to deliver this event as it had been done in the past. So the team at the Woman’s Center came up with another idea, “Men Who Cook” month! Simply put its an opportunity to call your friends, invite them to a meal at your home and ask them to donate to the center in your name. Since MWC month...

Republicans v. Democrats... Why am I a republican? Well, it goes a little like this. I believe as an American you have the right to work hard and earn a living anyway you’d like so long as it’s legal. Legal, as defined by the laws for the local municipalities, states and federal government. I also believe that taxes are something we all must pay in order to have a functioning government that provides a number of services like security, safe travel, an interstate system, trash pick up, emergency services, unemployment insurance, and a certain amount of public welfare and assistance to the disabled and...

A Thoughtful Letter in Troubling Times... I found this letter and it’s response when reading posts on Southcoast Response, the Standard Times public bulletin board forums. I felt the author’s points were so vivid and so purely American I had to re-post them here. Good people of New Bedford, please take time to read Mr. Knox’s sentiments as a small business owner in the United States. His argument is compelling and his truth frightening. Henry Bousquet The first email below was sent out by General Motors to all suppliers. The email that follows is a response from one such supplier. Dear Employees &...

New Bedford City Council mum on the lay-... So, at the risk of sounding like a loon. Where is our New Bedford city council on this whole local fiscal crisis situation?  Have they no opinions on the potential layoffs, do they not have a dog in this fight? Perhaps it’s easier to say nothing rather than to take a side here? I’m concerned that the same folks that gave Mayor Scott Lang his uncut budget two years ago are quick to say I told you so about his fiscal policy, but not so quick to discuss their thoughts or ideas on the layoffs and pay cuts that threaten our city services. While I don’t claim to be a public...
